Calculating your Building Materials

Knowing a few formulas for calculating the amount of building materials you are going to need in a construction project can be very useful when you are making plans for home improvement. So practise making these calculations and you will find it easier to estimate the total amount of things you are going to need for your next DIY project.

To calculate the amount of concrete, multiply the length by the width then by the height of your base. Afterwards, divide the number you get by 27. This will give you the total amount of the concrete you need in cubic yards. For calculating the two by four lumber used in framing walls, convert the whole length of the wall that is being constructed into inches. You can do this by multiplying the total number of feet by 12, and then divide the length of the inches by 16. You will then know the total number of 2 by 4 lumbers you require for the project.

When you want to calculate the framing and decking required for a roof, divide the entire roof length by two feet in order for you to find out the amount of rafters you are going to need for framing the roof. When it comes to decking, multiply the length by the roof's width and convert it to inches, then divide the number by 32, which is the square feet of one plywood sheet. This will give you the number of the plywood sheets you are need to have.
